So I'm in a bit of a pickle right now with my Alienware 17 R3.. It came with Win10 from Dell, I really couldn't stand Win10 so I ended up reformatting the harddrive and installed a fresh copy of Win7. Everything went fine until I needed to update the computer's devices.
It came up a bunch of devices that weren't updating on it's own. Two of the important ones is the USB and Network Drivers (wired and wireless). I've tried a dozen drivers that win7 provides and no luck. Anyone else have had this issue with their Alienware? It doesn't have a dvd drive fyi. Now I did uninstall the hard drive and connected it to my desktop, but for some reason the files were corrupted and wouldn't install when I put the harddrive back in the laptop. I haven't been this stumped in a long time. any help is appreciated
Right, so as the topic title states, what happens, is that I'm playing World of Warcraft, and once every 2/3 minutes, the framerates drop from stable 60 to around 12/13 for about 20 seconds. As I suspect it could be a hardware thing (my CPU is running at 82 degrees, if that matters).
My question to tech support is if they are aware of any known issues regarding the Alienware laptops experiencing these frame rate drops on WoW. Relevant info: ------------------ System Information ------------------

Hi there,
As you seem to be using an Nvidia Optimus system, can you check in the Optimus software that you have set it so that World of Warcraft expressly uses the Nvidia GPU for play? Alienware M17x R3 Drivers
yes, yes I have. You mean the Nvidia screen where I select which graphics cpu to use, right? Don't have anything called Optimus on the laptop.
It's probably a hardware thing, as it happens in games such as crysis 2 and fear 3.
Sounds like overheating issues, tried a cooling pad under the laptop ?
I think I figured it out, I uninstalled my video card, removed all the drivers using DriverSweeper, and reinstalled them. It seems to be working now, haven't experienced any FPS drops. I've reported the issue to Nvidia as well, they'll look into it.
Sounds familiar ;) ![]()
I'm going to have to bump this again, it's just happened again. Could it really be just an overheating issue (I did order a cooling pad, should be here monday) , or is there a more serious hardware problem.
bump
Wait til monday when you get the pad and monitor the temps, if its not that then we can take it from there
I'm going to have to bump this again, it's just happened again. Could it really be just an overheating issue (I did order a cooling pad, should be here monday) , or is there a more serious hardware problem. 90% sure it's a overheating problem. This post got a bit long but I'm just trying to contribute what I can to help out with the issue at hand in this thread. I bought a cheap Packard Bell notebook thinking that it couldn't possibly play much games. Specs: 2nd generation i3-2310 @ 2.10GHz 4 gig RAM Geforce GT 540M Man was I wrong, I could play most games on medium settings, some on high. WoW plays nicely on most settings on high with 40-60 fps. But. When playing games, suddenly the fps jumped down to 10-15 for a little bit, then back up, then back down, it just kept changing around like crazy. I haven't had much experience with notebooks in the past. I tried everything, settings in windows, uninstalling and reinstalling drivers, I did crazy a lot of pointless things for weeks. The notebook didn't seem all that hot to me, then I found a free program I could download that's called Throttlestop, version 4.0 I think is what I'm using. It can check temperature for graphics card, all cores on multicore processors, and most importantly, it can downclock the multiplier for the cores making the processor (cpu) a bit more weak (and running cooler). What I found was that when I put on a game that used the graphics card seriously, the processor temperature would shoot up to 85 celsius which is the limit on the i3 processor I have, once it hits 85 celsius, it shuts down a big % of it's power for a little bit to force the processor to cool down, then it turns back off and on again if the processors hits 85 again. The graphics card hit a max celsius of around 75 I think, which is so so ok. Still, I found the processor to be the bad element in my notebook. Underclocking the graphics card didn't have much effect on the heat at all, and underclocking your graphic card voids it's warranty, so that's not recommended. What I did was a combination of getting a cooling pad aswell as downclock the processor with through the multipliers from 2.10 GHz down to 1.5 GHz, to my surprise, WoW and other games still ran fine even though I limited the processor to 1.5. It still hits temperatures of around 80 but it no longer caps it out to 85 so that the fps gets messed up, so that worked for my situation at least. I'm fairly certain you have the same problem if you have seen your processors temperature reach 82 celsius. Get a cooling pad, see what that does, if not, use google to try and find Throttlestop 4.0. It does everything while inside windows so the warranty on your processor will not be voided by using this kind of program, it only limits the multipliers on your processor so it's not allowed to go higher in MHz then you set it to. If you decide to try and make use of Throttlestop, please read a bit about how it works before you change any settings and start making use of it. It has to be version 4.0 because earlier versions do not support the latest generation multicore processors. Don't know if they have added a new version already. At least for me, the solution was combining these two together. I'm fairly certain, if you cannot find another problem, this is your culprit. Because I think in general, processors don't enjoy themself so much when they are reaching temperatures of 80+ celsius. Overheating is generally a typical issue for laptops / notebooks, that's just how it is. Hi there, Also, just would like to say, I think the Nvidia Optimus system sucks, the first thing I did after trying it out for a bit, was turn off the option of it using which one it wanted. Have it use the graphics card 100% is the better option in my opinion, notebooks use less power generally compared to a desktop computer, and if you are running the computer without a power cord, I don't think your gonna sit down and play a lot of games for a long time. Still, even while using the combined system, games ran fine, because it always chose the nvidia card when I put on a high demanding 3D application. So as I wrote in my post above, I think the processor overheating is the real problem, and there's not much Blizzard's customer support can do to cover that. I did write tips about a possible solution that can be used though. I think I figured it out, I uninstalled my video card, removed all the drivers using DriverSweeper, and reinstalled them. It seems to be working now, haven't experienced any FPS drops. I've reported the issue to Nvidia as well, they'll look into it. If it's an overheating issue, like the things I have talked about in my previous posts, then there is no point in contacting Nvidia about it. Some notebooks chassis are built quite poorly so the heat inside the notebook does not leave in an effective way, some notebooks has bad types of fan(s) installed, some have a combination of the two. Putting todays hardware into small notebooks is quickly becoming an issue for many notebook manufacturers these days, because keeping the temperatures down aren't so easy. After buying a notebook myself I have called some manufacturers and gotten these facts straight from the companies directly. Because the latest processors and graphics cards generate quite a bit of heat, and it's probably not gonna get much better in the future. Also, many notebook models just has one fan inside, for the processor, when they should have two, one for the processor and one for the graphics card. Anyway, since I saw that you have an Alienware notebook, I'm a bit puzzled, because those are extremely expensive notebooks made for gaming as far as I know. Still, I have never seen one or tried using one myself. Just think it's a bit poor of Alienware / Dell, if you have spent the money on this kind of notebook just to have overheating issues. Alienware M17x Drivers
I solved it by alleviating the back side of the laptop with 2 rolls of duct tape. Now the laptop is slightly elevated, and fresh air can reach it now.
I use this with my series 7 gamer, works well and is quiet.

Another proof that duct tape solves everything
My cooler is here and this thread can now be removed, thanks all.
